What is Diversity Management?

Diversity management is the practice of addressing and supporting multiple lifestyles and personal characteristics within a defined group. Management activities includes educating the group and providing support for the acceptance of and respect for various racial, cultural, societal, geographic, economic and political backgrounds.

Managing diversity is defined as “planning and implementing organizational systems and practices to manage people so that the potential advantages of diversity are maximized while its potential disadvantages are minimized,” according to Taylor Cox in “Cultural Diversity in Organizations.”

Buckingham (2007) asserts: “A strong link exists between leadership and diversity. Leadership is about empowering people; bringing out the best in others. You bring out the best in people by making them feel accepted, respected and connected. When people feel good about themselves and the organization, they perform better individually and as part of a team, resulting in an organization that performs better.”  These are the same objectives and desired results of diversity management.

Why Diversity Management?

Beyond the fact that the world is diverse, diversity management is needed to address the people, processes, and performance of the organization.  It’s important for leaders, managers, and HR professionals to understand how these dimensions affect employee performance, motivation, success, and interactions with others. In addition, organizational structures and practices that have presented barriers to some dimensions of diversity should also be examined, challenged, and removed.
